Collective nouns are tricky especially if you are not aware of them. One way to avoid the mistake is to be familiarized with them.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed with collective nouns for the reason that I am wondering as to where grammarians got these terms. Some terms are a bit off with the group they are referring to. An example is "school of fish". I wonder if fishes go to school under the sea. CORNY :)
ReplyDeleteI thought "fish" is both singular and plural in form. However, we can use "fishes" if we are talking about different species.

This post is informative and at the same time entertaining. It is evident that there are tons of group nouns in the English world. It is noticeable that a lot of terms are given to animals.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your very informative post, the website for collective nouns will surely enrich my vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteI suddenly remember when I printed out a list of collective nouns. I accumulated 3 pages (by 3 column) because of the list. Thanks for sharing Limor.
